Conventional Ultrasonic Inspection

Ultrasonic Inspection is a versatile and portable method of inspection that utilises piezo-electric crystals and ultrasonic search units. The search unit applies a small current to the crystal that makes the crystal vibrate, which creates a sound wave. The Search unit measures the time of flight for the sound wave to travel from the probe, to the target or discontinuity, and return to the search unit.

This technique can be used for a wide range of inspections on a variety of metallic and composite materials. The inspections range from:

  • Thickness checks

  • Lamination scans

  • Volumetric weld inspections

  • Bonding checks on corrosion resistant coatings (Inconel cladding etc)

  • Volumetric inspection of Forging and Casting

  • Delamination checks on carbon composites, GRP tanks and pipework and much more
